All in all, sugar gliders are much easier then a dog or a cat in my opinion. My suggestion is getting a tent and playing with them in there in stead of letting them run around your room at first.
The bonding process does take a while but if you honestly are serious about them, it's easy just time consuming.

They are full of love for their owners once you get them bonded. You have to be willing to spend at least an hour a day with them, playing with them, bonding with them. With sugar gliders it's all about how much time you are willing to spend to with them. They get fresh fruit and veggies every night (they are nocturnal animals but you can get them out and play with them during the day) mine love corn and papaya. I feed them baby food with a sprinkle of special vitamins and calcium. Yes, they are more familiar with their owners. Mine LOVE it when friends come over to play. I am not sure where you heard that they are standoffish to others.
